Dominion Energy's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind
Portsmouth is rapidly emerging as the Mid-Atlantic's premier hub for offshore wind energy, thanks in part to the current Dominion Energy Coastal Offshore Wind Project. The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project was launched in 2024 and boasts an impressive capacity of 2.6 gigawatts. Once completed, it will feature 176 state-of-the-art wind turbines located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, alongside three offshore substations, undersea cables, and new onshore transmission infrastructure designed to deliver clean, emissions-free wind power to homes and businesses. This project is expected to generate enough carbon-free energy to power up to 660,000 homes, yielding projected fuel savings of $3 billion for customers in its first decade of operation. The Portsmouth Marine Terminal will serve as the central hub for the CVOW project and several other offshore wind initiatives along the East Coast, positioning Portsmouth at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution.
